Supercross season has started, and fans have been far from disappointed. From the shocking podiums to the crazy crashes, this season promises to be an exciting one.
The Monster Energy Anaheim 1 event marked the open of the 2013 season. Angles stadium was packed out, and San Dimas student Payton Witthans was there to experience it all.
“Everyone was so excited!” said Witthans. “It was almost like a party there. All of the fans were just there to have a good time and watch some great races.”
Most of the audience could not wait to see reigning champion in the 450 division, pro Kawasaki racer Ryan Villopoto. Villopoto did great in his heat, and started out in a great pole position in the main event. Villopoto’s lead did not last after being run off the track, and then a crash, landing him a final spot of 16th.
The winner of the race was none other than Davi Millsaps, a racer for Rockstar Energy Drinks. Millsaps was able to overtake Villopoto after he veered off the track early on and had a total of three crashes by the end of it. Millsaps Kept the lead until the last lap when Trey Canard overtook him in an inside turn, but he only held the lead for a few seconds before Millsaps took it back.
Villopoto was the clear predicted favorite, but even after the tough loss, his fans are still behind him.
“Millsaps got lucky, Villopoto is going to come back and win it all this season. He still has a lot of fight left in him,” senior Jeremiah Barefield said.
The 250 podium was less shocking by far, with Tomac coming in first, followed by Roczen. The race still had spectators on the edge of their seats with a few very close moments.
Supercross is recently being brought farther up to the surface, getting the next generation of racing fans ready for the new season. Look out for a new race every Friday night through the month of May on SPEED Network.
